The Road less traveled…

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

This poem is one of my favorite poems and Robert Frost one of my favorite poets.  While the poem stirs up images of rural travel, it is really about choices we make in life.  And when I find myself at a crossroads and needing to make decisions about various things, I remember this poem.   The roads traveled less in life are scary, and I try to remind myself that I’ve always come out on the other side.  Some times with a few bumps and bruises, but most times for the better. 

The older I get, the more I find I don’t like change.  But, if things don’t change they won’t get better.   And, God really has a sense of humor.  I’ve learned to not make plans or count on things staying the same because of this realization.  Mostly, it is fear of failure on my part.  Fear of taking on too much responsibility and then failing.  But, if I don’t try – I’ve failed already, haven’t I.
