What’s in a name?
Posted by starwoodgal on October 14, 2010
I have a problem. A quandary. A very puzzling situation before me. What ‘grandmotherly’ nickname should I attach to myself for the rest of my life?
I’m stumped. Befuzzled.
My daughter feels I should incorporate something traditional like grandma or gammy. I just don’t see it or ‘hear’ it. I never called my maternal grandmother gran-anything. She was Nanaw. But, my daughter has poo-poo’d every suggestion I’ve come up with thus far.
My mother is Mimi. My mother-in-law is Mem. So you see the pattern of non-traditional grandmother monikers in this family. So – I need your help. A challenge. Help me pick out my grandmother name. I’m open to all suggestions that do not contain anything with maw or gran in them. So let’s hear it. I need your help.
Oh – and the exciting part of yesterday’s new. Emily’s ultra-sound results. GIRL! I am so excited. I’m going shopping this weekend. I see lots of pink ruffles in the near future. I believe they have decided on Olivia Jordan Wood. Can’t wait to meet her.
Now – send me some suggestions. Help!

My mother used her initials: BB. My paternal grandmother was called Sugar–I love that one. I will be LaLa or Goose….and my boy would have been Olivia. Beautiful name! Maybe she could come up with a name;)

A girl will be so fun to spoil!!! tho my new grandson is sooo easy to spoil too!!!
I too went over this name thing too. Now that Ian has arrived I am “grandma”. Didnt see myself with that title til he arrived.
The name I chose for myself and didnt stick was “Nana”.

My sister in law is Ra Ra, kind of like a cheerleader. I think it was because the first boy couldn’t say GaGa. We think it is really cute and she is kind of like a cheerleader for the kiddos.

I just happened upon your blog from Bakerella’s visit to Pioneer Woman. I am glad I came.
I had to stop and share a cute story about my mother’s name. When I was having my first child my mother was mortified to be called the dirty “G” word. So she, like your self came up with a clever name in lieu of Grandmother. She chose “Grams”.
We lived in North Dakota at the time and “Grams” lived in California, but my mom wanted my daughter to know her so she called her ALL the time on the phone and always ended each call saying Kissey Kissey I love you! So sweet, and three years later we went to Grandma’s house for Christmas. When we arrived I told my three year old daughter to run and give “Grams” a hug. “Grams” said “Oh I sure have missed you!” My daughter then turned to me and said “That is not Grams, that is Kissey Kissey!” She has been Kissey Kissey ever since.
So I vote Kissey Kissey for your new non-grandma name, but don’t be surprised if your grandchild picks something else, something you will love oh so much more.

I was very traditional in my grandmother names – Grammy and Grandma. But it sounds like your family is all about the unique names so you should write an update and tell us what you came up with!
